Mile High Denver Auto Repair Releases Transmission Check Tips

Denver Auto services shop Mile High Denver Auto Repair Releases Public Service Announcement to Educate Prospective Used Car Buyers on Transmission Evaluation Best Practices

Denver, Colorado, May 31, 2010 - Mile High Denver Auto Repair today released summary information to increase informed consumer behavior in checking transmissions. Evaluating the mechanical soundness of transmission is of interest to all automobile owners and perhaps especially to consumers considering a used car purchase. Tips include:

1) Ask the salesperson or car owner for maintenance records. Whether a CarFax (or similar report) or actual maintenance records from the prior owner, a car’s maintenance and service history can be telling in predicting the long term mechanical soundness of the car. There is no doubt that properly maintained vehicles will have fewer mechanical problems.

2) Check the transmission fluid level and its quality. Refer to the car’s owner’s manual if necessary but keep in mind it’s important to check both the transmission fluid level and its condition. Reinsert the dipstick after removing and reinserting a clean dipstick to check the fluid level. A lower than required level can indicate a leak. The fluid should be clean without metal filings or black flakes. New fluid usually has a reddish appearance.

3) Test drive the vehicle. Drive the vehicle at various speeds including complete stop to lower speeds and then at faster speeds. Listen for a smooth transition when automatic transmissions are changing gears, without unusual sounds or jerking motions. Naturally be alerted if any warning lights such as ‘check engine’ or others are displayed which could be indicative of a serious mechanical issue.

4) Manual transmissions. Check for oil leaks on manual transmissions to ensure there are none. Drive the car while shifting through gears normally to listen for noises. Unexpected sounds may require further investigation by a qualified mechanic. Grinding, whining, or humming noises under any driving condition should be immediate signs of a potential problem.

5) Consult a professional. Transmissions are some of the most expensive items to replace or repair on a car. If a consumer has any doubts about the condition of a vehicle’s transmission then it may be a good practice to have it evaluated by a trained mechanic such as the trained technicians at Mile High Denver Auto Repair.
