Mile High Denver Auto Repair Lists Transmission Fluid Check Steps

Denver area transmission service center Mile High Denver Auto Repair releases public service announcement to inform drivers on the proper method for checking automobile automatic transmission fluid

Denver, Colorado, September 30, 2010 - Mile High Denver Auto Repair today released an announcement intended to provide information to interested members of the driving public on how to check the transmission fluid levels and condition on automatic transmissions. Proper functioning of a car’s transmission is integral to its overall operation and reliability. Additionally attention to routine transmission maintenance such as ensuring proper fluid levels is important to preserve the serviceable lifetime of a car and lower the cost of ownership by minimizing the need for repairs.

Checking and if necessary adding transmission fluid is easy and important to do periodically. Many drivers establish a personal routine maintenance schedule to follow for checking basic items such as fluids. To check fluid levels on an automatic transmission locate the dipstick handle that extends from the transmission. For the exact location of the transmission and dipstick check the owner’s manual for your specific make and model of car. Then follow the steps outlined here:

1) Remove the dipstick: The automatic transmission vehicle should first be in neutral or park with the parking brake engaged. It’s generally recommended that the engine be warm. Leave the engine running while continuing the checking process.
2) Check the fluid: Checking the fluid means inspecting the condition of the fluid as well as verifying and if necessary correcting transmission levels. After removing the dipstick touch its coating of transmission fluid and rub the fluid between your index finger and thumb. In its operational condition the fluid should be pinkish in color and nearly clear. A problem would be indicated if the fluid smells burnt or if particles are noticed. If these problems are noticed then your auto technicians will need to drain and change the fluid.
3) The fluid level: To check the level then wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth and reinsert it into the transmission and pull it out again. If the transmission fluid is in good condition but doesn’t measure ‘full’ on the dipstick then a funnel can be used to add sufficient transmission fluid to bring it to proper levels. It’s important to avoid overfilling.

Automobile owners can determine the proper type of transmission fluid by consulting their owner’s manual. Numerous types are available so it’s best to consult an authoritative source on the correct type for your car. Bear in mind that some transmissions may exhibit symptoms that require repair or in extreme cases even replacement. Checking the transmission fluid is a good place to start and maintaining its condition and correct level can reduce the need for potentially costly repairs.
