Mile High Denver Auto Repair Releases Oil Change Educational Information

Denver Auto services shop Mile High Denver Auto Repair Releases Public Service Announcement to Educate Consumers on Tips and Best Practices Associated with Automobile Oil Changes

Denver, Colorado, April 30, 2010 - Mile High Denver Auto Repair today released summary information to increase informed consumer behavior concerning oil changes. Changing a car’s oil is one of the most basic maintenance items associated with owning a car. Some automobile owners may prefer to change their car’s oil themselves while other delegate the responsibility to a trusted auto service provider. In either case some basic questions are:

1) When to Change the Oil?
The frequency for making oil changes varies with the make and model of the car. The most authoritative guide for every vehicle is its owner’s manual. Even within the owner’s manual there may be separate indications for so-called ‘normal’ use conditions and ‘severe’ or heavy use conditions. Drivers may mistakenly believe that just because they only drive their car to work every day that their use level is normal. However, stop and go city traffic can fall into the heavy use category. Drivers are advised to examine their driving behaviors and weigh them against the manufacturer’s standard to determine the proper driving interval for oil changes. Consulting you vehicle’s mechanic may be a good idea as well. Some newer cars today have systems that determine when the car’s oil needs changing and alerts the driver automatically.

2) What’s the Purpose of Changing the Oil?
Technically speaking oil does not “wear out.” More accurately the oil’s ability to hold engine contaminants (sludge, carbon deposits, et. al.) becomes depleted. The effectiveness of oil additives lessens with time and driving miles. As the properties of the oil become less effective, increased friction and more wear and tear on the vehicle can occur. When one considers the potential damaging effects of postponing a $30 oil change, it’s clear that the potential permanent, long-term damage to your car’s engine is not worth risking. Referring to the vehicle’s owner’s manual is once again the best indicator about what type of oil product is best for your car.

3) Monitor the Oil Level
Checking the oil level using the engine’s dipstick is an important item to monitor. Most automobile owners are comfortable with checking the engine’s oil level and it’s a good idea to do it even after an oil change just to make sure. Checking the oil level at two week intervals is a good rule of thumb to follow. Preferably check the engine’s oil level when the motor is cold after it’s been sitting overnight. If it’s a little low then top it off between complete oil changes to ensure the proper levels are maintained.
