A car’s braking system is undoubtedly one of the most important. The ability to slow or stop a car as needed is fundamental to safe operation of a vehicle. Some common problem areas related to braking systems include:
1) Basic Wear
Braking systems will naturally exhibit wear over time and use. A rule of thumb may be to check brake pads every 6 months just to confirm there’s no problem. Symptoms that may indicate special attention is required can include brake squeaking, grinding, and increased stopping distance indicating a lessened effectiveness of the brakes. Sounds associated with braking may not always be indicative of a problem although given the importance of brakes to the safe operation of a vehicle it’s best not to take chances. If any abnormal indications are present such as those mentioned here then have the brakes checked by your mechanic.
2) Warped Rotors
This type of occurrence is often more prevalent in newer cars but can become a factor in connection with all disc brake systems. Rotors are known to warp due to overheating or incorrect tightening of the wheels. Pulsing when applying the brakes may become noticeable and be due to a warped rotor. Solutions to the problem may include having the rotors refurbished or even replaced it necessary. A trained mechanic can diagnose the problem and recommend the best approach.
3) ‘Best Practice’ Braking Tips
Tips and best practices applied during automobile operation can help lengthen the useful life of brakes and avoid the need for costly premature repairs. In general it’s recommended to avoid “riding” your brakes, that is, applying light pressure to the brakes for an extended period. Applying moderate pressure and then releasing the brake to allow them to cool is best. Shift to a lower gear on downgrades to avoid the need to apply brakes. Allow the engine to share the chore of braking by downshifting to allow the car’s engine to do some of the braking instead of relying solely on your brakes. Brake cleaners are also available and used by some mechanics. Your car’s mechanic may be able to provide suggestions about specific products for this purpose.
