As a leading provider of auto repair services to Denver Colorado residents, Mile High Denver Auto Repair regularly reviews published reports in order to compile and release information to benefit the car buying public. Spring and summer rainstorms in Colorado can be intense and can require special driving precautions. So-called ‘fishtailing’ and ‘hydroplaning’ are common rainy weather driving hazards. When road hazards occur due to weather conditions it’s not always possible to delay travel plans. To operate your automobile safely during rainy periods it’s best to follow prescribed safe driving practices to minimize potential hazards.
Among recommendations are to:
1) Decrease your speed. This one’s obvious but despite that it’s not uncommon to see other motorists exceeding safe speed limits even when road conditions have less than optimal traction. While there may not be hard and fast rules to determine safe speeds at all times, when in doubt it’s advised to slow down. Acceleration and the ability to sustain speed may not suffer during rainy conditions but slowing and stopping requires more time and distance. Be a smart driver and slow down when it rains.
2) Drive conservatively. Quick stops and sharp turns may be ill advised even under optimal road conditions, but when it’s raining they should be avoided altogether. Roads can be slippery when it rains. Hydroplaning, when a vehicle’s tires actually lift from the road due to water, means the car will be less responsive. Attempts to stop or turn quickly under these conditions can lead to loss of control and an accident. As mentioned before driving at lower speeds can reduce the need for such actions.
3) Turn on your lights. Turning on your lights not only helps visibility in less than sunny conditions but allows other vehicles to see you. A large part of safe driving practice is avoiding other vehicles. Making your car more visible which allows other vehicles to avoid yours is a worthy objective also. Remember to turn on your lights.
4) Know your limits. During especially hard downpours it can even be necessary to pull over to the side of the road and wait for the rain to subside. Driving visibility in the midst of intense cloudbursts can be reduced to only the immediate area in front of the vehicle, leaving little room to react should it be necessary to stop quickly. Stopping quickly on wet roads is inherently more dangerous. Combined with reduced visibility the potential for having an accident is further increased.
