Mile High Denver Auto Repair
Top Colorado auto repair shops provide auto maintenance and repair on a wide variety of mechanical issues. While maintenance recommendations specific to a particular make and model of automobile should always be followed, a few general guidelines are included here for reference:
Air filters – For many cars air filters are to be replaced about every 15,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Air filters that become dirty and no longer function to specifications can adversely affect automobile fuel economy and lead to higher exhaust emission gases.
Antifreeze/Coolant - Fluid levels can be checked in the plastic “overflow reservoir” and inside the radiator. Of course caution should be taken to remove the radiator cap only when the engine is sufficiently cool. Antifreeze that is dirty or rusty colored has diminished effectiveness and should be replaced. Regular antifreeze is bright green in color. Newer extended life antifreeze is red in color.
Battery – Loose or dirty battery cables are common problem sources when engines fail to start. Cable ends and terminals can be cleaned with a wire brush to remove corrosion. Dirty, corroded battery terminals can significantly reduce the lifespan of a battery and alternator.
Belts – Checking is recommended to detect worn or loose belts. Belts with worn edges or cracks should be replaced.
Brakes – Checking the brake fluid for proper levels is important. Additionally brake systems should be inspected for leaks and component wear. Check brake pad and shoe wear prior to warning signs of brake problems such as noises when brakes are applied or reduced braking ability.
Engine Oil – Oil is best checked when the engine is cold and with the vehicle on a level surface. When oil is replaced by a professional service ensure that all fluids, tire/air pressure, air filters, belts and hoses as well as tire condition receives attention.
Shock Absorbers and Struts – Check for fluid leaks around the shocks. Visible fluid and oil leaks, an excessive bumpy ride, leaning or swaying can indicate worn shocks. When it’s time to replace shocks and struts some mechanics recommend replacing all four for maximum benefit.
