Because cars are our business we’re naturally interested in most things related to automobiles. This includes driving research and statistics. In a study referred to as the “Just Drive” program, research shows how often young drivers imitate their parents’ driving habits. In 2005 the Medical College of Wisconsin also pursued this topic and gathered research through an online survey to gain additional insight into this relationship.
The study confirmed that parents have perhaps the biggest single influence on teenage drivers. According to the survey nearly 70 percent of teens said their parents influenced them in their driving behaviors. Unfortunately parents and other adults do not always provide the best models. In fact the survey found that many parents exhibit the same distracted, and potentially dangerous, behaviors that young drivers do including talking on cell phones, listening to music, eating, exceeding the speed limit, and tailgating.
Survey respondents, both teens and parents reported the same distracted driving behaviors that they admitted having done within the last 30 days. The top 5 were:
- Changing the radio station, tape, or CD (79%)
- Speeding (61%)
- Driving without both hands on the steering wheel (61%)
- Talking on cell phones (51%)
- Eating while driving (45%)
In an interesting side note to the survey, and perhaps more concerning, nearly 90 percent of respondents said that they, a family member, or a close friend had been involved in a car crash. However, more than half didn’t change their driving habits as a result of the accident. Even when the drivers admitted to being distracted, the tendency was to shift the focus to other drivers rather than themselves.
Other findings from the survey include:
- Teens are divided on whether they believe they drive differently with their friends than with their parents. Just over 40 percent said they don’t drive differently with their friends and nearly 40 percent said they do.
- Parents are also divided on whether they believe teens drive differently with their friends. More than 30 percent said they believe they do drive differently and nearly 30 percent said they don’t.
- When all respondents were asked if teens are often distracted drivers, 90 percent said they somewhat or strongly agree.

About Denver
The City and County of Denver is the capital and the most populous city of the state of Colorado, in the United States. Denver is a consolidated city-county located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level. The 105th meridian west of Greenwich passes through Union Station, making it the reference point for the Mountain Time Zone. The city of Denver's area is much smaller than that of Colorado's second most populous city, Colorado Springs.
The United States Census Bureau estimated that the population of Denver was 598,707 in 2008, making it the 24th most populous U.S. city. The 10-county Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area had an estimated 2008 population of 2,706,947 and ranked as the 21st most populous U.S. metropolitan statistical area and the 12-county Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area had an estimated 2008 population of 3,049,562 and ranked as the 16th most populous U.S. metropolitan area. It is also the second-largest city in the Mountain West after Phoenix. Denver is the largest city in the Front Range Urban Corridor, a fast growing Combined statistical area stretching across eighteen counties in two states. The population of the Front Range Urban Corridor CSA is estimated at 4,251,663. The city has the tenth-largest central business district in the United States. Source: Wikipedia.
