In this feature article for our website we make reference to the warning lights that are displayed on the dashboard of most vehicles. While each car’s warning indicators may be different we can make some observations that generally apply.
Modern automobiles are designed to provide drivers with information about the vehicle’s operating condition over the course of its lifetime. In addition to ensuring that the vehicle receives attention for all maintenance items, drivers need to be especially alert to indicators in the form of a warning light. Warning lights should never be ignored. To do so risks permanent damage to your vehicle, or even worse a failure of some of its systems that might result in an accident. Warning lights displayed on the vehicle’s console typically illuminate briefly when the vehicle is started. This is normal and not cause for concern. Warning lights that come on afterward while the vehicle is running can indicate something that requires attention.
A warning light that appears on most if not every vehicle’s dashboard is the brake light. If the brake light is displayed then the problem may be anything from driving with the parking brake applied to low brake fluid. It’s easy enough to check the parking brake and release it. Some drivers are even comfortable with topping off brake fluid, while others may prefer to have this done by a qualified auto technician. The braking system is of course vitally important to the safe operation of your vehicle. If the cause of the brake light display cannot be immediately identified and resolved by the driver then the vehicle should be taken to a qualified repair shop immediately. Driving a vehicle with a potentially compromised braking system poses an unacceptable risk for drivers, their passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians.
Another dashboard light that drivers may encounter is the oil light. When the oil light appears it may mean that the oil in the automobile has dropped to a dangerously low level. Most drivers can manage checking the oil. Topping off the vehicle’s oil level may temporarily take care of the problem. However, if the light remains then there could be a problem with the vehicle’s oil pump. In this case some auto technicians will advise drivers to not drive the vehicle at all and instead have it towed to your repair shop. If in doubt it’s a good idea to contact a qualified repair facility and ask for advice. The cost of a tow may not be a planned for expense but the cost of damaging your engine could represent an even greater cost.
The engine light is another indicator that often points to an issue with the vehicle’s engine but that may not adversely affect performance. The air bag light is another warning. Referring to the owner’s manual may be helpful to understand the significance. The battery charge light is another type of warning display. These types of warnings may not make your car unsafe to drive but should be attended to at your earliest convenience.

About Denver
The City and County of Denver is the capital and the most populous city of the state of Colorado, in the United States. Denver is a consolidated city-county located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile, or 5,280 feet (1,609 m) above sea level. The 105th meridian west of Greenwich passes through Union Station, making it the reference point for the Mountain Time Zone. The city of Denver's area is much smaller than that of Colorado's second most populous city, Colorado Springs.
The United States Census Bureau estimated that the population of Denver was 598,707 in 2008, making it the 24th most populous U.S. city. The 10-county Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area had an estimated 2008 population of 2,706,947 and ranked as the 21st most populous U.S. metropolitan statistical area and the 12-county Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area had an estimated 2008 population of 3,049,562 and ranked as the 16th most populous U.S. metropolitan area. It is also the second-largest city in the Mountain West after Phoenix. Denver is the largest city in the Front Range Urban Corridor, a fast growing Combined statistical area stretching across eighteen counties in two states. The population of the Front Range Urban Corridor CSA is estimated at 4,251,663. The city has the tenth-largest central business district in the United States. Source: Wikipedia.
